WHATCOM PREP TRYOUT POLICY
Whatcom Prep Baseball Association (WPBA) is committed to providing an impartial, objective and accurate assessment of Player baseball skills. No tryout process is perfect. The Whatcom Prep board of directors reviews our tryout process each year to determine how to improve the process to give all the athletes a fair opportunity to show their baseball skills.
Player Eligibility
To be eligible to play on a WPBA team, Players must:
-Have paid all past due balances from previous seasons (player fees and uniform fees)
-All players should attend the tryout of their eligible age. If a player wants to play up they must request an evaluation at registration. Coaches will assess the player for both their age and requested age.
If a family has a special circumstance or their child is dealing with an injury come tryout date, email register@whatcomprepbaseball.com and we will do our best to accommodate a make-up tryout at a later date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ages
We offer competitive teams for players in the 9U through 14U age divisions. The cutoff date is May 1, 2026. Your player’s age on that date determines their eligible age group.
Example:
- A player turning 13 on/after May 1, 2026 is eligible for 12U
- A player turning 13 on/before April 30, 2026 must try out for 13U
Can players play up?
We generally encourage players to compete within their age group, but exceptions may be made. During registration, you may request an evaluation for an older team. Coaches will assess your player for both their age group and the requested level to determine the best developmental fit. If you have questions about this, please reach out.
When does the season start and end?
Optional workouts and training opportunities are offered in the fall and winter to help players stay sharp and build skills.
Official team practices begin in February, with tournaments starting in March or April. The season typically runs through July.
When are practices and how often are they?
Teams typically practice 2-3 times per week, with schedules set by each team's coach.
What if my child plays other sports?
That’s great! We encourage multi-sport athletes and support well-rounded development. We understand that other commitments may overlap, especially in the fall and winter. However, during the official season (March through July), we expect Whatcom Prep practices and games to take priority.
What are the costs associated with playing?
Whatcom Prep is committed to offering competitive baseball at an affordable cost. Player fees for the 2026 season are still being finalized and will be announced once teams are formed. Estimated 2026 players fees range from $1300 - $2400.
We provide a range of fundraising and sponsorship opportunities, with the majority of what each player raises applied directly to their own fees.
50% of all sponsorships go directly back to player fees.
We believe that cost should never be a barrier to participation. Scholarships are available for families in need—please contact us for more information.
What costs beyond player fees should be expected?
The only additional costs beyond registration fees are travel-related expenses for tournaments and games. Many events are within driving distance and do not require overnight hotel stays, though each team’s tournament schedule may vary. We make an effort to keep our younger teams closer to home.
Uniform jerseys are included in registration fees, but players are responsible for providing their own cleats, bat, glove, helmet, and bag. Catchers are expected to bring their own gear.
Some families may also choose to invest in one-on-one training or private lessons, but these are not required.
